Happy Birthday Bob Dylan

Born on this day in 1941, Robert Allen Zimmerman, AKA Bob Dylan celebrates his birthday today.

An extremely influential figure in pop music history, many of his early songs focused, with great depth and detail, on the political and social unrest of the 1960’s counterculture. “Masters of War”, was a commentary on war-hungry political figures, and, “The Times They Are A Changin’”, a song encouraging social activism during the civil rights era.

The song, “Like A Rolling Stone” was named the Greatest Song of all Time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2004. It broke down the barriers as far as what was considered folk music, clocking in at a lengthy 6:30 and featuring electric instruments that had yet to be introduced to the genre.

Dylan has won many awards as a musician and songwriter, namely receiving a 2008 special citation from the Pulitzer Prize jury. In April 2012, Bob Dylan was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

With so many accomplishments and an illustrious and incredibly prolific career spanning five decades, it is quite difficult to sum up the life of this great man in just a few paragraphs.

Truly a legend in his own time, and a master of his craft, we acknowledge the life and work of this exceptional figure today.
